General information on Anthurium
The Anthurium originates from South and Central America. The plant grows in tropical and subtropical areas of these continents. The Anthurium also occurs in the drier regions around Mexico. The Anthurium is part of the large Araceae or Arum family. This family also includes the Spathiphyllum.

The Anthurium can be easily recognised by its unusual flowering type. The flower form consists of a spathe and a spike. The spathe is usually brightly coloured. The roots of the Anthurium are also unusual. The plant has epiphytic roots, also known as aerial roots. In its natural habitat, the Anthurium grows high in the trees of the tropical rainforest.

In the Netherlands, the Anthurium is also known as the Flamingo plant. The first Anthurium plants were imported to Europe around 1850. The breeding and trading of the plants started soon after. The Anthurium is famous for its durability and colourful flowers.
